Gil Spending Guide for FFXIV Free Trial
A guide for what to spend Gil on in the Final Fantasy XIV Free Trial.
The Free Trial Gil Cap is 300k, meaning you can only carry a maximum of 300,000 Gil at one time. Any additional Gil that is earned will be deleted, unless you spend what you currently have. Gil is the main currency in FFXIV, and it’s quite easy to reach the Free Trial Gil Cap while playing. Typically, you’ll reach the cap during your progress through the Main Story Quests, among other things. Free Trial players are unable to trade other players or buy anything from the Market Board. All things considering, these are all of your options for spending that hard earned Gil.
Leveling Gear
Spending Gil on armour, weapons, tools and accessories is one of the more accessible options for newer players. There’s 16 Combat Classes, 8 Crafters and 3 Gatherers, surely one of those needs some gear. Just mind your Armoury Chest space, you can only hold so much! There’s certainly better gear options, but if you need some quick gear, buying it from NPCs is a solid option. Here’s some locations where you can buy equipment.
Level 1-49 Gear:
- Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks – East Hawkers’ Alley and West Hawkers’ Alley.
- Old Gridania – Rosewood Stalls and Ebony Stalls (Near Leatherworkers’ Guild)
- Ul’dah – Steps of Thal – Sapphire Avenue Exchange
Level 50-60 Gear:
- Ishgard Foundation – The Pillars – The Jeweled Crozier
- Azys Lla – Helix – Repository Node (LV.60)
- Rhalgr’s Reach – Independent Merchant (Lv.60)
Level 62-70 Gear:
- Kugane – Kogane Dori Markets
Many other shops can be found scattered around the maps, but they won’t be much different than the ones listed above. In the market areas, there’s usually multiple NPCs to talk to, each carrying different types of gear. Some vendors may carry a bit of everything, however.
Glamour
There’s not a lot of Glamour options which are buyable for Gil. Regardless, here are your options:
- The Emperor’s New Gear: Purchasable in Vesper Bay, Western Thanalan from Goberin, for very little Gil. These Glamours actually hide your equipment so can run around nakey, should you choose. Or just hide a piece of gear. To purchase this set, you’ll need to complete the quest “Absolutely Glamourous” from Swyrgeim, who is nearby.
- Spring Outfit: Purchase in The Gold Saucer from Kasumi. (Wonder Square, aka the Yellow Area) You might know this as the other NPC at the Fashion Report. You’ll need a grand total score of 600 points from the Fashion Report to buy everything. (Shirt, Bottoms, Shoes)
- Starter Outfits & Hempen Outfits: Buyable from three locations. (These have Race and Gender Restrictions)
- Bango Zango in Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks
- Maisenta in New Gridania
- Roarich in Ul’dah – Steps of Nald
- Bridesmaid & Best Man Outfits: Buy from Rianne in Ul’dah, across from Aetheryte. 6k Gil to 18k Gil per piece.
- All armour can be used as glamour! So every NPC that sells gear is a potential for new glams. (see above)
- You can also craft new glamours, so put that Gil towards some materials! (see material section below)

Consumables
- Gysahl Greens: This is the basic food you use to summon and feed your Chocobo Companion. You can find these from various merchants such as Bango Zango in Limsa Lominsa, Maisenta in Gridania and Roarich in Ul’dah. Don’t be afraid to buy a full stack of 999, you’ll use them eventually.
- Other Chocobo Foods: You can buy additional food for your chocobo from the Vath Tribe, in the Dravanian Forelands. (A zone in Heavensward.) Unlike Gysahl Greens, which are used to summon your companion, these foods boost your chocobo’s abilities. Curiel Root’s raise EXP rates, Sylkis Bud’s raise ATK, Pahsana Fruit raises enmity, Tantalplant raises max HP, and Mimett Gourd increases healing potency.
- Food Buffs: Buying large stacks of food can be a nice option for spending your Gil. Any type of Food alone will grant you a 3% EXP buff for 30 minutes, which doesn’t sound like much, but it adds up. Aside from EXP the extra stat bonuses can be pretty helpful as well. You can buy food in many places, such as in the city market areas. The best food that’s buyable for Gil comes from the Kogane Dori Markets in Kugane.
- Dark Matter: If you have your Crafters leveled, you can use Dark Matter to repair your gear without needing a Mender NPC. (Even in Dungeons!) You can even boost it’s durability above what it normally can be, nearly doubling it. Dark Matter can be bought from the typical Market areas found in cities, among other places. It’s recommended to buy the highest grade available for use on all levels.
- Dyes: If you like Glamour, you’ll also like Dyes. These can be used to change the colours of your equipment and glamour, should the item allow it. Not all dyes can be bought directly, but the ones that are buyable with Gil can be found in the city shopping districts.
- Clear Prisms: These can be used to craft Glamour Prisms, along with some other materials. Definitely not the best method of getting Glamour Prisms, but it’s an option. You can buy these from the same NPCs that sell Gysahl Greens (above). You can also buy Glamour Dispellers there if you want to remove any glamours.
- Healing Potions: Typically you don’t really need potions in FFXIV, but that’s not to say they don’t have their moments. A little extra healing could mean life or death at the right time. They could also lessen the burden on any healers in your party. HP and MP Potions can both be useful. Status effect potions aren’t worth buying at all, they’re one of the more useless items in the game. As always, these are buyable from an NPC found in the city markets. Higher level potions can be found in Kugane.
- Fishing Bait: For fishing you can get away with just using Versatile Lures for the most part. (Lures you don’t need to stock up on, they don’t get used like bait.) However if you’re into Ocean Fishing, it may be beneficial to stock on the three baits that are used for Ocean Fishing. Once you unlock the activity at the fishing guild, head over to the docks near the arcanist guild to stock up on bait.
( For other specific baits, I would wait until you’re trying to catch a specific rare fish, otherwise it’s just a waste of space.)
Crafting Materials
This is probably my top recommendation out of everything here, crafting things constantly keeps my Gil purse empty. You’ll need to be interested in crafting for this to be a valid option, but if you’re trying to make the most of your Free Trial time you should definitely give it a try. Of course you could always gather everything yourself if you wanted, but that’s a lot of work and since you’re sitting on stacks of Gil anyway, you might as well buy some materials~ Below are some locations where you can buy some Crafting Materials.
- Tradecraft Suppliers: In each of the main cities, (Gridania, Limsa Lominsa, Ul’dah, Foundation and Kugane), there are Shopping Districts with a ton of NPCs you can trade with. The Tradecraft Suppliers in particular sell a variety of low level materials for each crafting class. (The one in Foundation is called a Sundries Vendor.)
- Guild Suppliers: Each of the 8 Crafting Guilds have Guild Suppliers which sell low level materials for the class that they represent. These have more options compared to the general tradecraft suppliers. Gridania has Carpenter and Leatherworker. Limsa Lominsa has Armorer, Blacksmith and Culinarian. Ul’dah has Alchemist, Goldsmith and Weaver.
- Material Suppliers: In each of the four Residential Districts, you can find Materials Suppliers. As the name suggests, they sell materials. These are somewhat similar to the tradecraft suppliers found in cities, in that they sell low level materials for all classes, just with a different selection.
[If you’re a house tenant, homeowners can have their own special Material Suppliers which offer a much wider range of low level materials.] - Scrap Salvager: This amazing NPC resides in Idyllshire, from the Heavensward expansion. The Scrap Salvager sells a bunch of higher level materials, ranging from Level 50 to Level 60. The materials can be a bit pricey, but if you’re looking for a Gil sink, this can be the best place.
- StB Material Supplier: This vendor can be found in Rhalgr’s Reach, a town that you visit very early in Stormblood. This NPC sells a large supply of materials needed for Level 61+ crafts, all the way up to Level 70. While it’s somewhat expensive for bulk orders, the time saved is well worth it.
- Other Vendors:
- Holasfhis the Fishmonger: Limsa Lominsa, south-west of The Aftcastle – Sells fish for Culinary use.
- Z’ranmaia the Herbalist: Limsa Lominsa, south of Marauder’s Guild – Small variety of materials, mostly for alchemists.
- Jijiroon (Junkmonger):Â Upper La Noscea, SW of Aetheryte near boat. Sells “Scavenged Gear” materials used for Vintage crafts.
- Sileas the Jeweler: Ul’dah, near Goldsmithing Guild – Sells a variety of finished gemstones.
- Tribal Vendors: Tribes must be unlocked to access shops. Some materials require you to rank up a little first.
- Amalj’aa Vendor: Southern Thanalan, sells materials for Armorer and Blacksmith, items like ingots and plates.
- Ixali Vendor: North Shroud, sells materials for Carpenter, items like lumber and branches.
- Kobold Vendor: Outer La Noscea, sells materials for Alchemist, items from mob drops. (Blood, horns..)
- Sahagin Vendor: Western La Noscea, sells materials for Culinarian, items for cooking recipes.
- Sylphic Vendor: East Shroud, sells materials for Weaver, items like cloth and thread.
- Moogle Vendor: The Churning Mists, sells a variety of materials.
- Vanu Vanu Vendor: The Sea of Clouds, sells a few different materials.
- Vath Vendor: The Dravanian Forelands, sells materials for Armorer and Blacksmith, mostly metal nuggets.
(Stormblood tribes do not sell materials for Gil.)
[ You can use the Eorzea Database page for Gil based shops, to view item selection: Link ]
Tribal Vendors
I mentioned the materials that you can buy from Tribes above, but now it’s time to talk about all of the other things that you can buy for Gil. For most of these items you’ll need to be a high rank, so it’s not really an option early on, but give these some consideration once you progress a bit.
[ The Amalj’aa, Ixali, Kobold, Sahagin and Sylph Tribes are from A Realm Reborn. ]
[ The Moogle, Vanu Vanu and Vath Tribes are from Heavensward. ]
[ Stormblood Tribes don’t really sell anything for Gil ]
- All of the 5 ARR Tribes have 1 Mount for sale, costing 120k Gil each.
These require a Trusted Reputation to buy. (Sworn Reputation required for Ixali) - All of the 5 ARR Tribes have 2 Minions for sale, costing 25k Gil each.
First minion requires a Trusted Reputation (Sworn for Ixali), second minion requires Allied status. - Each of the 3 HW Tribes have 1 Mount for sale, costing 200k Gil each.
These require a Sworn Reputation to buy. - Each of the 3 HW Tribes have 2 Minions for sale, costing 30k Gil each.
Moogle requires Sworn for the first minion, Allied for the second minion.
Vanu and Vath require Trusted for the First minion, Sworn for the second minion. - ARR Tribes have unique dye colors which are buyable for cheap.
- HW Tribes each have glamour for sale, ranging from 30k Gil to 130k Gil.
- HW Tribes each have furniture for sale. Almost useless for Free Trial.
- The Vath Tribe have some special Chocobo Food for sale.
- The Moogle Tribe sells Crafting and Gathering Gear, ranging from Level 48 to Level 55 (IL100).
ARR Relic Weapons
If you’re brave enough to complete a Zodiac Weapon, it offers a good way to put your Gil to use. Specifically, upgrading to the Zodiac Braves stage of the Relic. This step requires you to purchase 4 different items for 100k Gil each. You also need to buy some smaller priced items during your journey. Rounding up a bit, you’ll spend around 500k Gil per Relic that you create. Congratulations, you’re now poor. (and have a shiny new weapon!)
Other Gil Options
- Aesthetician: The Aesthetician can be unlocked from a Level 15 Quest in Limsa Lominsa. When you go to an Inn Room you can ring the Crystal Bell to summon this NPC. This person lets you change your character appearance, much like the character creator at the start, minus a few features. You can change your hairstyle or change your makeup with this handy little feature. After accepting your changes you need to pay 2,000 Gil. It’s not much, but it could add up if used often.
- Levequests: Crafting and Gathering Levequests are repeatable quests that request specific items for completion. Typically, that means you go craft or gather those things yourself. However, these items don’t need to come from your own hands and can sometimes be bought from vendors. These can be a very quick way to level your non-combat classes, so keep an eye out!
- Grand Company Supply Missions: These are very similar to Levequests. Specific items are requested for completion, only this time they’re daily turn-ins and you can only do so many. Same rules apply here, however, go buy any materials that you’re able to!
- White Crafting Scrips: This also falls under “crafting materials” but I thought I’d mention it anyway. You can buy materials from the Scrap Salvager and turn them into collectables, which you can then exchange for Scrips. It’s not very cost effective since there’s better ways to get scrips, but if you need some quickly, go ahead and buy yourself some!
- Repurchase Lost Items:Â If you ever accidentally lose or discard a special or unique item, such as Quest Items or Relics, it’s possible that you can get them back – for a price! Speak to a Calamity Salvager found in any of the 3 starting cities for the option to repurchase lost items for a few Gil.
- Desynthesis: Using desynthesis to break down items bought from NPCs can be useful! Firstly, you can use this method to raise your crafting Desynthesis Levels. Secondly, it’s possible to get specific materials to use for other things, such as crafting. One specific example is to desynthesize Bridesmaid’s Sandals for Fieldcraft Demimateria III. (Bought for 6k ea from Rianne in Ul’dah.)
- Achievements: This option is for hardcore Free Trials players who want to do everything possible. There’s a few achievements that you can grind at the cost of some Gil. One option is buying items to desynthesize 10,000 times. Other options include the craft 10,000 high-quality items, per class. Just to name a few. These achievements can be incredibly tedious and time consuming, but it’s an option.
…and so that concludes my guide on how and where to spend Gil while on the FFXIV Free Trial!
As a pro-tip, you can use the search function on the checklists to search for Gil related items. Try some keywords like Gil, Purchase or Buy.
